Hi everyone,
Since my knitted baby toque took me forever, I decided for the next baby gift, I should crochet something instead. So here it is: Cute little toque and booties, which went so darned quickly, I couldn't believe it.
Also finished this week: my Christmas lap quilt, which I have been working on since last November, and finally got back to.

Here's the baby gift . . . finished! The toque pattern is from a Debbie Bliss book. I don't think I'll ever make a baby toque again, because it took me FOREVER!!!! At least for adult toques, you can wear them for more than one year.

Okay, so I think that this Tenderheart bear is the cutest thing I have ever made. Too bad I had to give him away . . . I was really impressed with how well he turned out. The pattern for this was really easy to follow, so if anyone wants to make a Care-Bear, I have a book with all of them in it which I will be happy to share!

our trip to block island: it rained every day. the baby is still smiling and still damn cute!

and, finally people! trekking socks. yarn purchased in san jose, ca. sock 1 started across country. sock 2 started in boston. finished between boston and philly.
pattern: my own. bits and pieces from sensational knitted socks book. toe-up baby.
needles: sz 1 until 4"into leg. switched to sz 2 to accomodate soccer calfs.

i *heart* these socks.
i just bought 35 skeins of knitpicks color your own fingering. then isaw they have superwash too! 10 more of those to come in the next week.
i will let you know when i update the shop.

oh, and my chem class is finally over, owen's dad had a heart attack (but, thankfully, is okay) we went to one wedding, one funeral and owen and i bought a house!

For those who have been watching me working on this and grumbling about it for months, here it is. The Faux Russian Stole from Gathering of Lace, done in anonymous Shetlandish wool cone yarn, size 5 needles, color Blue Ming. The finished size was a bit larger than the 24" X 72" stated in the pattern.

I am quite proud of myself. My computer skills are pathetic and this was a true test. (one of the highlights of my day yesterday was figuring out how to post a photo on blogger. from my housemates BORROWED digital camera. We dont even own a regular camera!)

I woke up at 7 this a.m. to post these! There are more photos to be had (5 more skeins for a total of 10!) but Adam is at the zoo with a bajillion 8th graders and took his camera. the rest will go up tonight.

Let me know what you think! Also, if (WHEN) these do sell, what would be a sweet little package? Wrap in tissue, and nice ribbon, quick thank you note but anything else? What would make you want to buy from me again and again if this was your first package from me? (besudes the kick ass yarn?) chocolate may melt. I am not too keen on homemade stitch markers, but probably could make some nice ones.....hm... any ideas?

Hello everyone,

So I brought the shell with me to Canada to burn (well, those were my intentions). Anyways, while I was showing it to my mom, she said that it would probably fit her - and guess what??? It fit her perfectly. At least it fit someone and I didn't have to burn it=) I still feel that the pattern is complete crap though - this size that my mom is modelling is the extra small (supposed to fit bust size 30). And I had her check my gauge too, and it's right - it's just the pattern that does not work out.

Just letting you all know that I am on a "knitting sucks" train of thought since I worked tirelessly on that stupid tank for the last month and a half only to find out that it is HUGE!!! Even though I was making the smallest size, and yes, my gauge does match up with what they say it should be. So I am swearing off knitting . . . well, for a while at least=) I'll be off to Canada tomorrow, so I'll see you all in a couple weeks!

I posted this on the snb site as well, but I thought I would spread the word as much as possible.

Tom, Allison and I are going to start an Etsy shop selling our handpainted sock yarn, either together, or as separate sellers with links and support to one another -- there are some me-moving-to-philadelphia-logtistics-to be sorted out asap. We'll let you know the details to come. there are 13 skeins of yarn in the mail as we speak!!! yum.

I was thinking that it would be neat to have a few (3) of you knit a pair of socks out of the yarn we make so we can post on the shop page examples of what the yarn looks like knit-up. More and more I am leaning towards acid dyes, too, which seems more permanent and color-friendly. All you would have to do is promise a quick turn around time, (a week and a half or so. is this reasonable?) and provide good digital photos of the socks looking awesome and beautiful and lovely on your feet -- and you can have the skein of one-of-a-kind handpainted yarn for free!!! We will probably sell it for $20 or so. It looks like that is the going rate on the shops.

I hope to have the yarn to me in about a week, and dyeing to begin tues the 9th if not sooner, with the skein in your hands asap after that. (pray for dry hot sun so they dry fast!) The first three people to respond to my email: ecmg13@hotmail.com get it. Also, please specify what color family (blues, greens, pinks, etc.) you prefer so when we dye we have you in mind. Who knows, you may even have a color named after you!! Tom is the master-of-all when it comes to center-pull balls, so please let us know if you want us to ball it up for you, too!! (Or we can just leave it on the skein)

If you don't want the pressure of knitting with a timeline, but want to join in the fun, please post ideas of what your perfect pair of handdyed sock yarn looks like -- specific colors, solid with slight variation, pale green with flashes of hot pink etc.....and a name for the shop that would catch your attention (but not scare you away).

ok, so I have photographic proof of a couple projects I've finished, like I said, I'm rather proud of myself...
here goes one, my felted bag I made out of two skeins of Noro and a lil' bit of Lamb's Pride, felted half by machine and the rest by hand, which I think I prefer alot more...

I also have a WIP picture of a mini-aran I' was working on and have subsequently finished, but I think I will wait until I can get a picture of it on the subject I made it for before I post it...

Hi all, I just wanted to check in with everybody and let you know we're still kicking around here. Mom caught a cold just as she finished healing her rib, but has now recovered and has started going back to Pilates. I caught the same cold Mom had and have generally recovered, but had some back problems and heartburn problems (kicked off by anti-inflammatory I took for the back problems) and though I've recovered from the above, have been beset by a serious case of the grumpies. You guys just wouldn't want to hear me whine about everything. So I'm waiting for the fit to pass and will be tuning in soon, or at least I really, really hope so...
I'll have to get Mom to bring all her bags and socks as she's been just going crazy making lots of these. She even made a spiral flute case for my flute. With silver accents and everything. She's also started really getting into embellishing bags with beads that she gets on sale. If you ever want to know where the good e-deals are, ask Mom.
I meanwhile have one sleeve left on another sweater and am experimenting with a cotton lace pattern to edge the bottom of one of my shirts that happens to be too short. I have also started a spinning project that will become a sweater for Russ, who noticed I was making another sweater and didn't like that it wasn't for him. He doesn't wear sweaters! Maybe he will now! Take care and keep it clicking!

haha! us groovy employees at the place which i work are supposed to promote lots of fun fur during april. we are to sell it like mad. unfortunately, some of the tactics they've come up with for this include someone holding a "demo" of how to knit with it, (take a guess who they'll harass for that one) as well as trying to get all the "associates" to wear fun fur accessories. jeez. not only does this get me back for mouthing off about fun fur, but also for claiming that we should be able to wear colors, as well as things we've made. i swear, the gods are laughing ferociously right now. yeah. i'm already working on bargaining tools such as: i will knit accessories for everyone in the store to wear as long as i'm exempt from this groovy idea of theirs. having everyone in the store wear fun fur is a great marketing idea, and all around awesome, but one tattoo of a dragonfly is offensive? who the hell thinks of these policies?

i have a few items that i may or may not have shown off yet.

Here for you to view is the embossed leaf socks from IK-- a recent issue (winter? 2005/6). I made them using koigu and wooly nylon on US 2 needles. they have a beautiful toe, fit me well and are being sent to montana (one of my dearest friends was wed in november and moved to helena, mt. i am making her a quilt as a wedding gift, but decided to bribe her with socks for more patience. not that she is bugging me, i'm just feeling guilty because my hands would rather knit that sew some times....). i do think the socks are rather beautiful.

like my bloomers? hehe! and yes that is part of my yarn stash in the closet. and some baskets full of projects that i wish i had more time to work on.

here are some new pop-up mittens (tom nick-named them "galovmitts") to take the place of my old beloved grey and black ones. i am thoroughly enjoying the new colors. yarn: manos..., US 6, Pop Up Paw pattern. loverly!

So, as you might well imagine, last year, Mom got up and personal with a bunch of llamas, goats, sheep and alpacas. I really don't know about the bunnies. I thought we visited the bunny tent, but we don't have any photos ... Doesn't the llama look laid back?
Our spinning class has two more weeks to go. It's definetly worth it. Take care you guys, spring is coming!

So Mom and I are too tired from one late spinning class every week to also get together with all of you who are healthy enough to get together with anybody, and having been following the yahoo.groups police-state nonsense(involving a group name that shall go nameless), we decided to dig out our thesaurus (Mom's in book form, mine online) and come up with some alternative group names that would offend no one. Here goes:

Fidget n' Fuss, Loop n' Lament, Needle n' Whine, Fiddle n' Fuss, Click n' Carp, Snivel n' Sticks, Twiddle n' Moan, Berate n' Create, Fashion n' Passion, Craft n' Groan, Click n' Grouse, and Yack n' Tat.

Drop the n' and we could be The Clever Carpers, The Nimble Wailers, or The Nimble Hell Cats.

If we wanted to put a more positive spin on it, we could be The Contented Clickers or The Serene Stitchers.

Some of the above might make excellent names for rock groups too....

Before & After Felting

Here's the before (on the tree), and the after (on the rock) of the "Lucy Bag" that I have been toiling over for so long. It still turned out bigger than I thought (see the picture on me), but it's great for bringing lots of stuff around. I will definitely use this pattern again, and see what else can be done with the different sizes and shapes!

So while we're on the subject of eyelash yarn, I just had to share this charming photo of Anya and Mara wearing two eyelash scarves knitted by mom. I think the girls just look stunning, don't you? Actually, they both have purple jackets and were these scarves quite a bit shorter, they would be the perfect accessory for the daily constitutional out on the open space trails. Actually, I bet some people would laugh 'til they cried, but that's a nice compliment to well dressed dogs!

Three generations of bag-makers

Hi all! Here is my daughter Susan, yet another fiber-happy member of my family. In the picture above, Susan is wearing a bag she crocheted in yarn she spun this last summer (note: her shirt says "Ask me about my vow of silence). In the other picture is a bag she crocheted out of Lamb's Pride worsted and then felted. Notice that the bag is made of "granny squares" and is not lined. We were delighted to see how well it tightened up. Susan designed both of these bags. She hates patterns and prefers to explore, both with yarn design and for final projects.

this is my latest score! i have been anticipating it's arrival since december when i special ordered it from Borders (because i had the perfect amount in gift cards). I love it-- most garments and projects are garter stitch, but lovely and simple and worked with such thought and skill! and i like reading the journal entries-- it has a very personal feeling.

so of course i want to make this:

... for myself of course! don't you think i need a winter bonnet? it involves the sewing machine and cutting the work! that would be new for me! it sounds like a steek, but it is a little different and "magically" creates the bonnet shaping. I wonder if when the pattern reads "For all sizes", she is referring to children or both children and adults? i think i will still give it a go!

I also am anxiously awaiting to make this NOW (it greatly lead to my decision to own this book!)

I'd do it this very moment if i could decide on a good yarn. Something soft, something bulky (US 10 1/2) and a color that won't look to weird (like poo, or birthday cake frosting...) any suggestions?

okay. so here is the finished blue gift shrug. I don't think i'll block it because it is cotton and will have enough time to expand on it's own. Yarn: Mission Falls Cotton, Needle: US 8, knit from cuff to middle of back, grafted together, i used the magic loop method for the selves to spare the under arm seams.

Ya'll can notice my lovely arse (a la pajamas), sans layer upon layer of cotton dresses. Also, my charming USA hat from the olympics of 2002 and apparently the clear sign that i have been watching far too much ice skating, a la the ballerina-like wing span and hand position. hehe!

Also complete is the pair of Elfine's Socks (thanks Alex) also a gift. I am very pleased with these. I changed the back leg to 2x2 ribbing for more structure after time (i hope). I used a merino wool (with wooly nylon thread for reinforcing the heel and toe) from Textiles A Mano. It was lovely to work with! I used a US 1 needle in the magic loop method and because of the new technique i can now be considered a born-again sock knitter! I have several new ideas pending.

Oh. My. Goodness. It's time for us knitters with good sense, and decent taste to finally make a stand against this ridiculous fun fur epidemic. I was finally coming to terms with people making eyelash scarfs, but today.... Today the fun fur made an attack that I was nowhere near prepared for. It came and side swiped me right when I wasn't expecting it. As you may know, JoAnn's has their own brand of yarn called "Sensations" in many differing varieties. Some of it is pretty cool - I have legwarmers I'm working on out of some of it, and Tom has one legwarmer done from a different Sensations yarn. Unfortunately, you've got to know your audience, and thusly, JoAnn's brand of yarn also has a few different eyelash and fur type yarns. I was finally adjusting to that fact. Big Mistake. Today, as I was putting up the yarn from the new shipment, I opened a box to find a new sensations yarn called "Monaco". This yarn is a genetic mutant made up of funfur/eyelash mixed with what they refer to as "eyelet" but unfortunately, it just ends up looking like the muppets shaved their pubic fur, and weaved it in. NOT OKAY. If you're bored, if you want a laugh, or if you'll be in JoAnn's shopping for something far more tasteless, make sure you stop by the yarn section to gawk at this new offender. Really. I'm still wretching.

Flower Power for Valentine's Day

BACKGROUND STORY: I am knitting 150 of these flowers for my June 3, 2006 wedding favors (with some help from my dear SNB friends and my mom.) Imagine each flower is perched atop a chocolate colored box the size of a small box of tea. Each flower will be

We has our wedding in October; a la the mums in my hair (my mom thought i ought to have a bundle of flower, i thought not. we reached the conclusion that if i wore some flowers it would look lovely)

because there was a lot of "what happened to your wedding photo?" questions i have posted some photos that i like, including the wedding. fact of the matter is that i got shy... i just wanted to include a photo so badly, but there was that whole missing digital camera piece... long story short, enjoy!! Here are my many felted(fulled) wool hats. I found my move here from California to be a slightly chilling experience and these take the edge off! I knitted all of them from commercial wool yarn, except for the purple, blue and cream one in the lower right hand corner.

Okay, so I'm seriously lagging in getting to work, but just wanted to say that this was a truly great idea, and I'm glad Erica got this set up for us. I, like Emily, have no digital camera, but we have a scanner. This means we'll have to take analog photos, and scan them in. Maybe we could scan the sweater! That would prolly not work quite as well. This is a humble attempt to keep my stash tidy.

I spun Eureka, CA fleece rescued by my son from the farmer next door, who doesn't "do" fleece but does shear the sheep in the warm weather. After son skirted the fleece he sent it to Frankenmuth Mill for processing. It was delivered in due course to our home here in Boulder and we've been spinning with it ever since.

In keeping with the aforementioned "humble" nature of the project, I dyed the roving with Kool Aid in motley colors.

The bag is very large, even after felting.

More lunch bags

Here are two bags and a hat I knit without a pattern from Romney/Corridale mix, mill processed roving that I dyed with Kool Aid and Gay Wool dyes while avoiding working on my sweater. Come to think of it, I managed to squeeze in lots of other projects so as to avoid the sweater. It wouldn't have taken so long to knit had I gotten around to it more often.... Though you probably can't see in the picture, the bags and hat all have a little spiral in them because I knitted singles right off the bobbin and did not set the twist (as is frequently done). This makes the fabric very elastic and springy and it spirals the direction in which the fiber was spun. I also felted the bags to make them more dense and insulating because they are lunch bags. So much for elastic fabric!

I know I'm going nuts here, what with all these posts and all, but I have a little free time this weekend and I'm having fun sharing. I hope you all enjoy!

Oh look, it really works!
Here's another crochet project of mine from last summer as I was busy avoiding my sweater. This one is also mostly commercial yarn with some handspun thrown in. I didn't use patterns for this or the other one in my previous post. This one I crocheted from two strands of worsted weight wool yarn so it's nice and thick. I made a fat felt ball button and a crochet chain loop for closure. Because it's so thick, this does a good job of keeping lunch (with an ice pack) cold.

So if this works, you all will be looking at a crocheted knitting bag I made while I was on vacation this summer. It's mostly commercial yarn (Lamb's Pride) I was using up and you can also see if you look closely, that I even can keep a nice pattern in it if I fold the pattern. Not good for the pattern, but I get knitting results! I've been crocheting since I was ten or so and friends commissioned me to make coy little dresses and handbags for their Barbie and Skipper dolls. When I was a young pretty girl in my early twenties, I enjoyed crocheting lace on fine hooks. I'll dig some out and mom can get a picture of it.

I am pleased to announce that I've finished my sweater!! The darned thing took me over a year what with spinning and knitting and ripping out and re-knitting and running out of yarn and spinning more, etc, etc. I am beyond delighted and may be able to bring myself to wear it in public now and then.
